TAVISTOCK 22 IPSWICH 5
Match report courtesy of Tavistock Rugby Club
The tourists put up strong resistance in this match that was played in a howling gale. The home team proved that despite the weather conditions, by keeping the ball in hand good running rugby was possible and this resulted in all 4 of Tavistocks tries being scored in the first half. The first try came as a result of a penalty on the visitors’ 22. The ball was fed out to winger Dan Oner who cut back across the pitch and powered his way through the defence to score. From a 5m scrum, following a Tom Rickard hack through, George Rogers went for the corner but was driven out. Tavistock were now putting the pressure on and smart thinking by George Rogers saw him take a quick tap penalty that enabled Phil Snell to go over for the second try which Josh Stevens converted. The third try came from Bob Finbow who picked following a break for the line by Mark Friend. Tavistocks final try came after a turnover on the visitors 22 which resulted in Mark Friend scoring in the corner. The second half saw the visitors with more possession but sterling defensive work kept them at bay. However, they finally managed to drive over for their only score.
JHS adds "Ben Grimwood was awarded the Ipswich try, but considerable assistance was given by Andy Slater, who got the ball over the try line, was held up, and unselfishly unloaded to Ben."
The squad thoroughly enjoyed this match in the mud, having to be hosed off fully clothed in the showers. Revenge was sweet in the boat race.
A really nice atmosphere in this friendly family oriented club, perched on a Tor at the top of a hill in the Moors!
